I have been going out with the Heroes since 2009. It is an opportunity to give people some things that make their lives easier, without judgment or agenda, practicing generosity. On the Stadium route we meet and talk with people who are mostly living in their vehicles: trucks, cars, RV’s. Many of our clients are men, and many of them are over 50, 60 and even 70 years old. For this group the propane canisters we bring mean heat and cooked food. Our sandwiches, hot chocolate and socks are much appreciated, but I think that the socializing and recognition are at least as important as what we give away. And the bus tickets – always in demand! For all that there’s nothing as rewarding personally as seeing someone immediately eating a sandwich or hot oatmeal – we get back so much more than we give!
